Breaking the Form - Hybrid Short Story Challenge

Year 9 · English · Extension Task · $6.99 AUD

A Year 9 English short fiction extension task in which students write a 400 to 600 word hybrid short story that borrows and bends another text type, such as a text-message thread, found document, list story, reverse chronology or diary. A model story told as a text-message thread shows how form creates tension, and students then write a 200 to 300 word rationale explaining three deliberate choices.

Part of the "Symbol and the Writer's Choices" sub-unit. Aligned to AC9E9LA03, AC9E9LE06 (Australian Curriculum v9).

Students will:
• Borrow the conventions of another text type for a story
• Break one convention on purpose to create tension
• Carry a symbol or motif across a change of form
• Write a rationale explaining deliberate choices with quotations

A ready-to-teach extension task, supplied as PDF, editable Word (DOCX) and PowerPoint (PPTX).
