Best Free Teaching Resources for Australian Primary Schools, by Subject

By The EduSellers Team · · Teacher Resources

EduSellers lists 5,175 published teaching resources at the time of writing (November 2026), and 773 of them are free. Narrow that to primary — anything tagged Foundation to Year 6 — and there are 529 free resources across every learning area. This guide picks one or two genuinely useful free resources per subject, explains how the email-only download works, and links the free hub for each subject so you can keep going.

How a free download works

You do not need an account. Open the resource, enter an email address, and the download link is sent to you. The file arrives the same way a paid one does — usually a print-ready PDF plus an editable DOCX or PPTX — and under the same personal classroom licence: use it with your own students, adapt the editable file, but do not redistribute or resell it. An account is optional; it keeps your downloads together in one library and lets you leave a review. Every free resource on the site is listed on the free teaching resources hub, which you can narrow by subject.

Mathematics

Mathematics has the largest free primary collection: 129 resources. Two to start with. Area of Composite Shapes (Year 6, AC9M6M02) is the most downloaded free resource on the site — a visual lesson on splitting compound shapes into rectangles, with a colour-coded worked example, a "subtract the missing piece" method, three grid-based practice shapes, two word problems, a full answer key and teacher notes. At the other end of primary, Setting Up Number Centres: Counting On and Making Ten (Year 2, AC9M2N03) is the first lesson of a hands-on centres sequence — it teaches the two strategies and the routine, so the rotations run themselves afterwards. English

95 free primary English resources. Planning Your Argument with OREO (Year 4, AC9E4LY06) gives students the Opinion–Reasons–Examples–Opinion scaffold for a persuasive paragraph, which maps directly onto the text-structure and persuasive-devices criteria in NAPLAN persuasive writing. For narrative, the Year 5 Narrative: The Story Mountain lesson plan (AC9E5LE05) teaches the shape of a story — orientation, complication, climax, resolution — before students draft. Science

41 free. Energy All Around Us: Sources of Heat, Light and Sound (Year 3, AC9S3U02) opens a four-lesson physical-sciences sequence with observation: students identify sources of heat, light and sound and sort everyday things by the kind of energy they give off, before the vocabulary is formalised. Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS)

HASS is listed as History (43 free primary resources) and Geography (49) on EduSellers. Who Lived in a Colony? The People of Early Sydney (Year 5, AC9HS5K01) has students identify the main groups of people in an early Australian colony and describe one part of life for each. Reading Maps: The BOLTSS Conventions (Year 5, AC9HS5S05) teaches the border, orientation, legend, title, scale and source conventions students need for every map they read or draw afterwards. The Arts

50 free. Shapes All Around: Seeing and Drawing 2D Shapes (Year 2, AC9AVA2D01) is a Visual Arts lesson that doubles as a maths one — students notice the 2D shapes around them and use them to begin an artwork. More at free Arts resources.

Health and Physical Education

46 free. Managing Big Feelings (Year 3, AC9HP4P03) is the most downloaded free HPE resource on the site: a Personal, Social and Community Health lesson on calming strategies for managing big feelings safely, the third in a Friendships and Feelings sequence. More at free Health and Physical Education resources.

Technologies

38 free. The Engineering Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Build, Test, Improve (Year 5, AC9TDE6P01 and AC9TDE6P05) teaches students to name and follow the steps of the design process on a STEM challenge, and it is the process you can reuse for every design project in the year. NAPLAN

Not a learning area, but 37 of the primary NAPLAN preparation resources are free, including the Year 3 reading-strategy lessons. See free NAPLAN resources or the NAPLAN practice tests hub.

Using free resources well

Three suggestions. Treat a free resource as a sample of its seller: if the free lesson's success criteria, differentiation notes and answer key are good, the paid unit from the same store will be built the same way. Check the AC9 codes and the state edition before you download, exactly as you would for a paid resource — free does not mean unaligned, but it does not guarantee alignment either. And keep the editable version, not just the PDF: the point of the DOCX or PPTX is that you can change the names, the numbers and the context for your class next year. The full primary catalogue, free and paid, is split by year and subject on the primary school teaching resources page.
